The students focused on speaking clearly and created iMovies with maps, powerful images and video clips that supported their argument.

Welcome to VTND studios.
Today we will be discussing the proposed damming of the Mekong river.
The Mekong river is 5000 km long. It stretches from the mountains of Tibet, all the way to the Mekong Delta in Vietnam. The Mekong river touches 6 countries Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, China and Vietnam.
Newsreader:
The Mekong river has been an outstanding environment for all people but now it is changing. There are plans to build dams.
There are many who believe these dams will have a negative effect on people in Laos.
It is a big problem around Southeast Asia and it needs to be fixed.
We traveled all the way to Laos to interview a fisherman's and find out his perspective on the dam construction.
News reporter:
Today we have a fisherman here with us and he will be telling us his perspective on damming at the Mekong river.
News Reporter: What is your name ?
Fisherman: My name is Nikor.
News Reporter: How do you feel about the dam project?
Fisherman: I feel sad, angry, and disappointed because or else I can not feed myself and my family.
News Reporter: How will Dams affect you ?
Fisherman: Dams will make fish extinct because it will block fish from going to there homes and get their food.
News Reporter: This is the end of the interview , back to you Lei Jun.
Newsreader: As you see from the Interview there are many arguments showing that it is wrong to build a dam because it can destroy nature.
WE LOVE DAMS
Kelly-new reporter and villager and Government
Kanika- interview and villager and Government
Kelly - Good morning today we are talking about the dams in Laos and Kanika is going to interview some of the the Loas villager and the Government. There has been a lot of discussion about the proposed damming of the Mekong. Some people think it is a great idea. Others think it is a terrible idea.So we asked our special guest reporter Kanika to give us her perspective on this issue.
At the field:
Reporter / Kanika: My name is Kanika, I am interviewing villagers in Laos.
I am in a village on the banks of the Mekong river. This village has 60 million inhabitants.
The people in this village are farmers and fishermen. I will be showing you all the reasons why the dam is a good idea.the Mekong dam is 5000 km long - from the mountains of Tibet ,all the way to Mekong delta in Vietnam.
Some villagers say the mekong dam can help the people. Laos can also receive income from the dam. Laos can make a lot of money for the dam per year.
Kanika : Laos is a very beautiful country. The villagers led simple lives. They grow crops, plant vegetables and catch fish in the river. This does not need to change. There will still be crops and fish to eat.
Kanika -One reason the government says the dam is good is because all the new houses will have electricity and will have access more education. Let's ask some of our villagers for their perspective.
Kanika - What do you feel about the dam being built?
Villager kanika - It is a good idea. It is good for Laos and for me. I get a new home and a lot of new stuff. I now have a radio, television, and electricity. My lifestyle has improved. I used to live in a shack on the bank of the river - now I am in a house with many luxuries.
All the houses in my new village have electricity, and the villagers can go to the shop for nutritious food with the compensation money that the Government gave them.We also got 5 thousand dollars,my family is very happy with this.
Kanika - Can you give me other reasons why this is a good idea?
Villager kelly - The dam will benefit to the local community. So far 100 million dollars has been spent monitoring and improving the water supply. This is making the water much better for us all.
Kanika - Thank you .
We interviewed the villagers but now let's talk to the government who are building the dams.
Kanika- Here is a Government official who is responsible for the Dam project.
How do you feel about the dam being built?
Government Kelly - The Dam is good for Laos.
The first thing is that is good is that all the money that we will make per year. This money will be used to help the people of laos. It will help the villagers in their daily life. The money we make from the Dam project will help to create pure and clean water and give Laos income so we can help more villagers.
Kanika -Can you tell me more about that?
Government Kelly - All the new homes have electricity, and refrigeration. We want to improve the lives of all in Laos. They also get a brand new car so they can travel with their family. They could use their car and go to the shop to get more nutritious food. The villagers could also let their children to go to school,so they can learn.
Kanika - thank you for telling me,but can you tell me just one more thing?
Government kanika- It is the benefits to the local community and so far we have earned 100 trillion dollars and that has been spent for helping lots and lots of villagers every year, and they also like getting more modern and they also get to live in new houses every time.
Kelly -Thank you for listening. Please tune in again and watch our news. Look's like Kanika and Laos is off the hook.
Thank you and goodnight

There has been a lot of discussions about the proposed damming of the Mekong. Some people thinks it is great. Others do not.
So we asked special guest reporter “President Sayasone” to give us his perspective of the damming of the Mekong river.
FIELD
My name is President Sayasone.
I am from and am the President of Laos.
I believe that building dams in Laos is a great idea.
Laos is a country in the south-east Asia.
It has high mountain and many low plains.
In Laos there is 236,800 sq km.
There is 230,800 sq km of land in Laos.
And there is 6,000 sq km of water.
Damming is a good idea because Laos really needs electricity and money.
People have houses that do not have electricity and I do not want Lao citizen to die out. With correct use of the Mekong river, Laos will never live poorly anymore.
Another reason that damming is a good idea is that the government expect more than 62 millions of dollar from one dam each year. In two years, the government will get more money than they spent. And Laos needs money, and a lot of it.
To make this super convincing, the third reason is that new technology has been made which makes a dam safe for fish. This would provide a ton of fish to farmers that depends on fish.
In conclusion, damming is very needed in Laos and will be very handy if every country with the Mekong river inside their border should do this too.

There has been a lot of discussion about the proposed damming of the Mekong.
Some people think it is a great idea. Others think it is a terrible idea.
Tonight we will be focusing on the problems with the proposed dam.
We asked a special guest reporter Vattanak to find out the perspective of people in Laos who do not agree with this idea.
Over to you Vattanak
Vattanak:
Hi my name is Vattanak. I will be speaking to people here in Laos about the proposal.
First I have a farmer with me. Welcome Howard.
Howard:
Thank you Mr Vattanak
Vattanak
What do you think about the dam?
Howard: I think the dam is a bad idea because it will cause a social disaster. There are two reasons why I think this. I will explain each in detail.
Firstly- Homes will be destroyed.
Tommy:
What is the second reason you think the dam is a bad idea?
Howard:
Secondly - food produce will be affected and income destroyed.
Newsreporter
Thank you Howard
Now lets move on to speak to an expert the scientist
Now Scientist do you think this a good idea or not?
Scientist
- My Name is Jeff I am a Scientist and work for ISPP. I think setting up dams in the Mekong River is a bad idea because if dams are built there 40 percent of the fish will be wiped out. Demands on the river are increasing and the fish do not stand a chance. I found that many dams in Asia do not have fish passages so fish can go through the dam without getting hurt and I guess that this dam does not.
News reporter
Thanks for that information Jeff
Next we will hear from another stakeholder in the situation. I have a local person who would like to share his perspective. Welcome Sal
Why do you think the dams idea is bad?
Tommy / Local
I think this is a bad idea because we poor people will have to find money to buy food/eat. Also we need to find crops. When we get enough money to buy crops we will need to find a place to farm them and fertilize them.
