Getting comfortable with descriptive language

Descriptive words - From my window Ms Alison’s class

Thank you to all Grade 4 students who contributed to our descriptive words list with ideas from their homework.


I See


  • I can see rotten leaves sleeping on the ground.
  • I can see people riding motorcycles quickly by.
  • I see the fish tank water being replaced with clean water.
  • I see leaves blowing away from the trees
  • I see the trees flapping
  • I see a fly pass by the window. Zzzz
  • I see a plastic bag on the ground. The wind is blowing it around.
  • I see a car driving by at high speed.
  • I see a coconut tree wriggling in the wind.
  • I look up at the beautiful sky.
  • I see motorbikes zooming by from my balcony.
  • I see flowers shaking like they are cold.
  • Traditional Khmer houses made of wood.
  • I see Jessie hoping around the garden, eating the grass.
  • Cloudy skies.
  • Busy people working.
  • Brown birds in the trees
  • I see beautiful trees striking up from the ground.
  • I see ladies working hard in the street.
  • I see grasshoppers hopping in the freshly cut green grass.
  • I feel the hard wood on my chair start to become more comfortable.
  • I see people working by the road.
  • I see a white car rushing by, very fast.
  • I see a bird flying freely in the high sky.
  • I see the wind blowing through the trees.
  • I see bars, walls and wire around my house.


I Hear


  • I can hear my housekeeper blowing things with a vacuum.
  • I hear people shoes flicking. Bung, bung, bung
  • I hear birds flying around, making tweeting sounds
  • I hear a bell ring and look up to see if we have a visitor
  • People building houses. It sounds like someone banging on my door.
  • I hear birds singing in my garden.
  • Loud sounds of a horn being pressed over and over.
  • Beautiful singing birds
  • People talking in the distance.
  • I hear the wind as it blows my hair like crazy.
  • I hear birds chirping to one another.
  • I hear the loud annoying sound of construction.
  • I hear loud barks and people.


I Smell


  • I can smell the smoke from people driving by.
  • I smell my shirt. it smells awful.
  • I smell snacks being prepared inside my house.
  • I smell gum from my sister - she is sitting close by.
  • I smell wet leaves
  • I smell smoke. Someone is burning rubbish in the street.
  • I smell a mixture of smells. Something fresh and new and old rubbish.
  • I smell poop from my neighbor's cow.
  • I can smell dirty smoke coming from cars.
  • I can smell a cold breeze.
  • I smell flowers that are striking up from the ground.
  • I smell clean fresh air.


I Feel


  • I feel a mosquito bite me. That really hurts.
  • I feel the heat in my shirt and pants.
  • I feel the wind blowing in my face.
  • I feel the heat touching me and making my skin hot.
  • I feel warm sitting on the floor. I sigh.
  • I touch my orchids and they are sticky and wet with fresh drops of rain.
  • I feel the invisible breeze flow through my hair.
  • I feel hot in the long pants I am wearing - like I am trapped in my pants.
  • I feel confident, happy and excited.
  • I feel peaceful. it is very quiet at the back of my house.
  • I feel rain drops hitting my skin as they fall from the sky.
  • I feel still and happy.
  • I feel the bushes striking me as I walk past them.
  • I feel rocks touching my feet.
  • I feel the wind blowing through the window.
  • I feel like it is about to rain very soon.
  • I feel trapped, bored and tired.

I Taste


  • I can still taste the delicious egg tart I ate earlier.
  • I take a sip of water and feel it move down my throat
  • I taste candy in my mouth. I taste a hint of mint.
  • I taste chicken. It is cooking and ready for dinner.
