Students writing Explanations on their own

Last week the students wrote Explanations in small groups.

On Tuesday the students gathered information and brainstormed as a class and then tried their own Explanation text.

Here are some examples of good Explanation writing …..

The students can read through these for examples of how they can set out their ideas.

Ellie

Each kernel of corn has a tiny droplet of water inside. Popcorn needs 14% water inside to pop. As the kernel heats up the water inside of the kernel begins to expand. The water turns to steam and the starch turns to hot goop. The kernel continues to heat until it pops. The starch from the inside will come out and be on the outside.
Lyka

As the kernel heats up the water inside it begins to expand. At 212 degrees the water turns into steam and causes a pop and a change to the starch inside the corn kernel.

Popcorn pops because of the water inside. When the kernel is heated the water inside turns into steam. The steam builds up pressure inside the kernel. There is so much pressure the kernel just blows open. The kernel turns inside out. The starch from the inside ends up on the outside. This is the white fluff that we see.
Molly

Paragraph Three

As it pops the steam is released. The popcorn turns inside out after it pops. First the starch is inside the kernel. When the kernel pops the starch ends up on the outside.
Moneth

After it pops the starch is on the outside. The starch has expanded because of the pressure of steam inside the corn kernel. The starch expands 40 - 50 times its original size. The popcorn cools quickly in room temperature and forms an odd shape.
