It is the year 241 in the city of Ember. Ember is an interesting city. In the city of Ember the sky is always dark. The only light comes from great floodlights mounted on buildings.
The graduating students aged 12 are at school. They are randomly picking occupations from a cloth bag. Lina Mayfleet wants to be a messenger. Another student Doon Harrow wants to save the city and work in the Pipeworks.
What will happen when the graduating class start work?
How does this relate to the box with the timed lock that was lost and is now in a the back of a cupboard? Why is the sky always dark?
