Mental math strategies

This week in Math we have been thinking about the mental math strategies we use to solve problems. We have also looked at some alternate methods to column addition & subtraction.

Here are some examples of repeat addition, number lines and compensation.

Today we showed what we are thinking on the page and decided which ones we like to use.
Obviously we will do most of these examples in our heads as we solve math problems or play math games like flipper.

Some students prefer to split numbers into their place value sections when solving large number addition and subtraction. Others prefer the column method.
