Removing the rubble - Poetry writing

REMOVING THE RUBBLE FROM A STORY TO CREATE A POEM

Students went back to stories they had written in the past month.
They selected two and ‘removed the rubble’ - highlighted the rich, descriptive language.
When they put it together they had created a poem.

After completing this activity with two pieces of writing the students discussed ….
What is a poem?

A poem is a descriptive story
A poem is all the best bits put together
A poem can … but does not have to rhyme
A poem is interesting and makes you think.
Sometimes poems have rhythm.
Sometimes there is one word on a line, sometimes more.

We can write poems about everything.

Here are some examples of poems students created ....

IN THE BAHAMAS

Today is the day
Jumping off a cliff
Risky
Tumble turning

Fear in my body
People screaming
Smell clean water

Jump off the cliff
Feels great
Decide to tumble turn
Going down
So fast

After relief
Pink sand beach
Snow cones

LYKA

THE NEEDLE

Ouch
Sobbing
8 years old

Doctor
Sharp needle
Goosebumps

Needle getting closer
Terrible
Worst day

Finally home
Straight to bed

SHELBY

THE WHALE

Big boat
Looking for whales
Nice Norway

Giant shape
Coming towards boat
Whale?
Closer
Ahhh
Under boat
Yes!

LUKAS

THE  BULLIES

Confident & brave
Bullies
Cliff
Can I jump?

Independent
Risk taker
One step
Jump!

Freedom bullies
Unstoppable
Splash
Success
Suprise

Crawling
Walking
I am the toughest
Bullies think I’m tough

Vattanak

FLYING

Gratefully
Incredibly
Extremely fun

Amazing
Surprising
I started to fly

Dream come true
Flying high
Beautiful
Tremendous

Fantastic day
Designed wings
Best day ever
Absolutely amazing

Kanika

SKIDDING OFF THE ROAD

Ahhhh
Ear splitting scream
Excited - PE

Fast as a cheetah
Tuk tuk rushing down
Skidded and Flipped
Middle of road

Watching in horror
Woman got up with difficulty
Driver up

Pants ripped
Road rash
Ripped skin

Thankful
Didn’t die
No broken bones

JED
