Writing news articles

The students have been writing news articles about our last field trip.
They have tried to cover all the points on the checklist we created together last week.
They will add their news report with pictures to their blog tomorrow.

WHAT GOES INTO A NEWSPAPER REPORT?

Contents,structure and lay-out

The five W’s (Who? What? Where? When? Why? How?) usually in the introduction.

Explanation of terms and names (e.g. Mr Wathana, a teacher at ISPP, ...Phnom Chisor, a temple on the top of an ancient hill,.....)

Factual Evidence

Title in bold big letters, catchy (alliteration)

Pictures

Usually we read/hear the most important information first (who, what, where, when)  and more information as we read on.

Title, date, author at the top

Sometimes the main idea of the article is in bold at the top.

Language

Speech marks to show eyewitness accounts or expert knowledge/ opinions

Punctuation and spelling are correct

Technical words to make it sound at an expert level

Do not use ‘I’ or ‘we’, but ‘they’ or ‘the students’

past tense when reporting on something (the students went…) and present tense when explaining something (the temple is on the top of a hill)

Neutral words, words that don’t carry a positive or negative meaning (e.g. not ‘really old’, but ‘ancient’)

Here are some examples of the students writing - first attempt.

The students went to Phnom Chisor because they are learning more about Belief Systems. Phnom Chisor has Buddha statues and Lotus flowers. It has lots of Buddhist symbols.

Phnom Chisor is 30 kms away from Phnom Penh. It has temples, statues and pagodas. The students prayed to buddha in temple. Also some students received a seyma which brings good luck. The seyma is red and is tied around your wrist. The students had to be respectful and quiet to show respect to Buddha.

The students had to climb up 412 steps to see the temples and pagodas. They went to an active temple and visited ancient ruins. “The ruins are older than Angkor Wat” said Mr Wathana a Teacher from ISPP.

ISPP is a good school because they go on many field trips. The students have fun with people from many other countries at school, because it is an International School.

STUDENTS WALK 824 STEPS

On Friday 15th January, 2016 all the Grade 4 students at ISPP, the International School of Phnom Penh, went on a field trip to Phnom Chisor.

The reason the Grade 4’s went on this tiring, long journey varied. Joshua, a Grade 4 student said “It is all because of UOI”. Another Grade 4 student Lukas said “Maybe because Mr Andy wants us to have another PE lesson”. But most know that the purpose of the trip was to learn about belief systems.

Phnom Chisor is a very interesting place itself. It has temples that are 200 years older than Angkor Wat, which is another famous temple in Cambodia. That interesting fact came from Mr Wathana and Mr Puy, who accompanied the Grade 4’s on their trip.

Some witnesses after the trip had interesting opinions on how the trip went. Lukas said “the trip was not good because we missed snack and lunch recess”.
