Barge update

Posted: 26 Jan 2015 by Mr Jon

27/01/15 10:18

Currently we are in Pochentong Airport. Our flight has been delayed for 30 minutes or so.

Students are happily playing cards and chatting in the busy airport.

Dear Parents,

I have received words from Mr. Jon, Ms. Bridget and Ms. Melinda that new posts have been added to the same link you received earlier today. They also mentioned that when there is free time, the students will add new posts, too. The teachers also would like you to be active inquirers and click on the same link regularly to find out what the students have been doing.

Here is the link again in case you did not get it the first time around.

Please let me know if you are unable to access this link.

Warm regards,
Kim

Tuesday - trips departing

Tomorrow the Grade 5 students on the Barge trip will depart. The students going on the Host country bike trip will also depart.

The students not going on these trips will stay at school with Ms Emily and I.
We will do some fun activities related to our current unit and learn about our host county. The students will have their usual specialist classes - so still need to bring running shoes on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for PE.

When the students return from the bike ride Ms Alison Fenzel will join us and take an extra group of students.

There will be no homework this week. I simply ask that the students read each day at home.

Khmer games at break

The ISPP Reps organized Khmer games at break time today.

Guest speaker - Wildlife Alliance

Ms Amy Van Nice came to speak to the Grade 4/5 students about the work of the Wildlife Alliance in Cambodia.

She talked about Cambodia's most at risk animals

  • Indochinese Tiger
  • Asian Elephant
  • Pangolin
  • Sun Bear
  • Pileated Gibbon
  • Royal Turtle
Wildlife Rapid Rescue teams (WWRT) work to crack down on illegal wildlife trade.
They have rescued 60,000 animals and released 90% back into the wild. If the animals are too injured, sick or young they are cared for at Phnom Tamao rescue centre.

So far 2,937 traders have been apprehended and the availability of wildlife in Phnom Penh has fallen by 90%.

Care for rescues wildlife (CRW) care for about 1,200 animals (90 species) at Phnom Tamao.
One of their famous guests is Chhouk the elephant. He was rescued in the N/E of the country. He had lost his foot in a poaching snare and is one of only two elephants in the world with a prosthetic limb.
Wildlife alliance has worked hard to protect the elephants in Cambodia. Only 4 elephant killings have been reported in Cambodia in the past 10 years.

The wildlife rehabilitation station is located in Koh Kong. They teach animals to be familiar with the natural environment of the south Cardamons before they release animals.

Economic drive for poor communities: Wildlife alliance try to help poor communities find alternate income. They have set up community agriculture and Community based ecotourism in Chi Phat.

Reforestation project: Maintaining water reserves for communities during drought periods - brought on by climate change. This project employs 40-100 villagers, mostly women, They gather seeds, plant them in pots and then replant back in the forrest.

Kouprey express - mobile environmental education - promotes habitat and species conservation.
They have visited 225 schools helping to educate and promote change.
