Action

The students have been reflecting about the NGO's from the fair they would like to support.

Three students - Ella, Molly and Carlota all expressed interest in helping the Deaf Development Program.

The girls suggested that we raise awareness in the school. We learn some sign language first and then teach 2/3 classes and our buddies.

They have timed their plan perfectly. Next week is Deaf awareness week in Cambodia. We have invited the DDP to come to school and teach the 4/5 students on Monday afternoon. The 4/5 students will then make signs to display in the school and teach younger students throughout the week.

By the end of the week all the staff and students at ISPP will be aware of the DDP and know a few signs (Cambodian sign language).

Well done to Ella, Molly and Carlota for coming up with a great idea to help an NGO in Cambodia.

Student read aloud

We have started a routine of student read aloud sessions in our classroom.

I started by reading Shock Monday. Julian followed last week with The big bad wolf and me.
Emely and Helen shared the story Princess smarty pants with the class today, and Molly is up next.

All the students will have a go. The book can be very simple - just another way of sharing stories and building up confidence when presenting.

Well done to Julian, Emely and Helen for being risk takers and getting up first.

Field trip next week to Chabad house

Your child has a note to share with you about a field trip next week.
We will be focusing on Jewish beliefs and will be speaking to Rabbi Butman about Judaism on Wednesday morning.

Please sign the permission and slip and return to school.

If you are interested there is an article about the Jewish community - photo essay and a picture of Rabbi Butman in this months edition of Cambodia Asia Life magazine (08,2014 - issue 92).

Last years Angkor pics

If you are thinking of sending your child on the Angkor fun run trip you may wish to see some pictures from last year.

The dates for the trip - Friday 5th December - Sunday 7th December.

Mr Ben will be having an information meeting for parents at 7.35 am, Friday 12th September in Ms Bridget's classroom (Room 36).

TEN reasons you should go on the Angkor fun run …. created by Grade 5 students

EXERCISE: You will get fit when you are training and have a healthy weekend with lots of exercise.

EXCITING: Everything is exciting. The bus trip, staying in a hotel, being with friends, the pool and the bike ride.
GETTING ALONG WITH OTHERS: You spend the weekend with lots of other people from school. You are all together in the bus, during activities and even share a room with other people. You learn to get on with your mates, other friends and teachers.

EXHILARATING: Riding around the ancient ruins and temples in the early morning is exhilarating.

COOPERATION: You will have roommates and need to cooperate with your friends, other students and teachers during all activities and games.

FUN: Bike riding is so much fun. You get to wake up early and ride around all the temples. It is awesome.

INDEPENDENCE: You look after you own belongings and spend the weekend away from parents and siblings.

MYSTERIOUS: You get to have a scavenger hunt with all the Grade 4 & 5 students, find mysterious objects and take funny pictures.

RISK TAKER: You can be a risk taker if you come on this trip in many different ways. One way is tasting a spider. On the trip up to Siem Reap we stop for a break at a rest stop that has spiders. You can taste one if you are brave.

FRIENDSHIP: On the Angkor run weekend you get to spend lots of time with your friends. You will come away from the weekend with memories of good times, fun and lots of laughter.

Angkor Wat Fun - notice

Dear Parents,

I am writing this letter to assess the level of interest amongst our Grade 4/5 families who might like their son or daughter to participate in the Angkor Wat Run and Bike Race Trip. The  outline program is indicated below:

Friday 5th December - depart ISPP on hired bus
Saturday 6th December - morning - optional 17/30km bike race; afternoon -trip to temples and other activities
Sunday 7th December - 3km fun run; hired bus back to ISPP, returning late afternoon.

At this stage, please carefully consider whether your child can commit to the training program and shows the maturity and behaviour standards required for residential trips. We will be setting up a training schedule throughout October and November. This will involve some lunchtime running activities at school and the school field. Students who are participating in the bike race would also need to commit to several Sunday morning rides. These students would also need to have access to a roadworthy bike.  We will require that each child has an up-to-date medical insurance for this trip.

The hotel where we will be staying, Empress Angkor, is located about 2km out of the town centre and has a  swimming pool and outdoor space.  Students will be staying in shared rooms (2’s or 3’s), which have ensuite bathrooms. We will be travelling on buses with seat belts that we will hire for the duration of the trip.

The trip should cost approximately $180 and will include accommodation, food and water, transport and entry fee for the 3km run. The exact amount will be confirmed once we have a clear idea of number of students participating. There will be an additional cost for the students who wish to participate in the bike race (approximately $60), which covers the entry fees to the bike race and transportation of bikes to Siem Reap.  Spending money is not necessary, but $20 is the maximum allowed and children will be in charge of that money.

There will be a parents information meeting on Friday 12th September at 7.35am, in Ms Bridget’s room, where we will distribute detailed information and answer your questions. We will also be posting information on the Elementary PE Blog (www.isppelementarype.blogspot.com)

At the moment we are asking you to complete the form below as an expression of interest. We will be asking you to confirm your child’s participation and the payment of a deposit by the end of September, when we will have confirmed the costs.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at school.
Yours sincerely,

Ben Wiggins (benwiggins@ispp.edu.kh)

Number facts - Math

This week in Math I will be gathering more information about the students strengths and areas of weakness relating to number operations. I will be giving the students a series of questions to ascertain their confidence, speed and conceptual understanding.

Some questions will require quick recall, others will be more open and the students can explain their thinking using pictures and manipulatives.

By the end of the week the students and I will be able to create Math goals for the first semester.

Writing recounts

The Grade 4/5 students have been writing and reading recounts in the past week.
In the coming week we will be editing and improving the recounts we have started.
We will also be focusing on all the important elements of a writing recount.

This week we will review the characteristics of a Recount
  • Uses the past tense
  • Uses a first person perspective
  • Includes a setting, events, and a summary
  • Progresses sequentially – tells the story in chronological order
  • Uses active verbs
  • Uses transitional words and phrases that relate to time
  • Describes the feelings of the person recounting the event
  • Uses adjectives to describe the events

We will also be brainstorming connecting words they are good to use in a recount. Such as ...
  • Then
  • Next
  • First
  • When
  • Later
  • The next day
  • Finally

Visit to Christian church

This week we have been learning about the beliefs and practices of Christianity. We watched a documentary on Thursday so we were ready for our trip to the church. On Friday we listened to Father Charlie, asked lots of questions and then had time to tour the church and saw the Sacristy, Sanctuary, Tabernacle, Altar and Baptismal Font and the Bible. We even went behind the scenes and saw the robes the priest wear on different occasions and the communion wafers.

The students have started writing about what they saw ...
We went to a Christian church. In the church there was a cross with Jesus on it. There were glass windows. There was a painting of his last meal and a wood carving of Jesus mother Mary. There  was a guy who worked at the church. He is a priest. He told us the story of Jesus. The story went like this… Jesus father told him (his father was God) that he was going to send Jesus to earth to tell the people about love. When Jesus told the Kings that they should make people equal the Kings got mad and decided to punish him. The killed him on a cross.
Helen (Grade 4)

We will continue writing reflections on Monday. These will be posted on the students blogs.
