Coding in the computer lab

The Grade 4 students have been coding with Mr Matt today.

They are revisiting Code monkey and working their way from level 1-10.
Once they have three stars and can code efficiently they can start working on levels 20 - 30.

Here is the link if you want to practice at home.

Students use their normal login details.
The class code is ta5uf

Dictogloss and listening skills

The Grade 4 students have shown great improvement with their listening and note-taking skills.
Ms Marcelle and I did a dictogloss activity with the class today.

The students wrote all the key words and then recreated the text with a partner.

Self checking books in the library

Ms Rachel taught the Grade 4 students how to check out their own library books this afternoon.
The students all have a library card with a bar code and can self check using the iPads.

All the students had a go and we had a record number borrowing books this afternoon.

Sharing our Passion projects and self reflection

The Grade 4 students shared their passion projects with their peers today.
They had the opportunity to discuss projects with students 1-1 and share their process and product.

The students considered what they liked about their project, what went well and what challenges they faced. They considered what they would do differently next time and which projects of other students inspired them.

Math update

This week we have been working hard in Mathematics.
We have been practicing our multiplication tables, and reviewing grid multiplication with large numbers. We also tried another division strategy - short division which most students preferred to long division.

Today we started exploring fractions.
We started with a pre-assessment task. The students used an A3 sheet to show me everything they understand or remembered about fractions. We will continue our work on fractions tomorrow and in the coming weeks.

Students selecting research areas

The Grade 4 students watched short provocations this morning.
We watched children from Syria talking about war, a short clip about the Mekong dam, Greenpeace and Children in Afganistan discussing what they would like their lives to be like.

The common theme was people want to be safe, have food, clothing and shelter. They want to have a house / shelter to live and have the opportunity to go to school so when they are older they can have a good future.

Students have selected an area that interests them and have started researching using Brainpop and Britannica
