U O I - Art Mirrors Life
Mr Arvin Mamhot “Purest of Photography”
Pointers Mr. Arvin gave us about photography were:
  • Inspiration -  take photos of ordinary things - street/countryside
  • Use lights, lines and shadows
  • Put the elements together
  • A fancy camera is not necessary
  • Viewer makes connections from the photos
  • Be a thinker
  • Wait for the moment
  • Use perspective - take photos from different angles
  • React to situations that affect visual senses or emotional senses

Use Mr. Arvin’s advice to inspire you. Take two black and white photos.
You can use a camera or a phone to take pictures. You can take as a black and white picture or edit on your computer.
Post the photos on the class google slide document (I have shared with you) with a caption about how you used Mr. Arvin’s advice. You will share your photos with your peers on Friday.

Math - Estimation and Measurement
You have estimated (roughly calculate / guess) the weight of object listed on your math sheet.
Please weigh each object and see how close your estimate was.
Bring your completed measurement recording sheet to class by Friday so we can share and check our understanding.

Extra practice / review
Mr Matt has shown you how to edit pictures using PIXLAR.
If you want additional tasks you can practice photo editing using the skills we have been working on in the computer lab.
See if you can remember how to start a new task or work on the task you have saved.

Charlottes Web

We finished reading our class book - Charlottes Web today.
We listened to an audio recording for the final chapters. Some students followed along with the book, others closed their eyes and listened to the story, visualizing as they cooled down after Angkor training.

We then watched the first 40 minutes of the film and made comparisons with the book and the way we saw the characters in our heads.

Charlottes web is a children's novel by author E.B. White and illustrated by Garth Williams. It is a classic, was published in 1952 and is set in England. The film is rated G.

We will watch the rest of the film next week and make connections with the story, the characters and some events.

Reviewing our understanding of Measurement

The Grade 4 students shared their Math homework.
All student completed the Math homework task which was AWESOME!

The students are starting to develop a better understanding of what a millimeter, centimeter, meter look like. Their estimates are becoming much more accurate.

We also started thinking about measuring the weigh of objects. The students made some estimates of the weight of objects and will check the accuracy of their predictions for Math homework in the coming week
.
We will measure many items using a range of scales next week, and get a better understanding of what 1 gram, 100 grams, 500 grams and 1 kilogram might look like.

The students weighed themselves using the large scales in the nurses office to help their understanding. I told the students I weigh 70 kgs which is double many of their weights and the same as 70 - 1 kg bags of sugar.

Improving the quality of our reflections & blog posts

This week we have been working on improving the quality and quantity of writing on our blog posts.
We have been reflecting on guest speakers / artists and different pieces of art.

The students will be writing, editing and publishing reflections about art / artists in the coming week.
Here is a blog post written by Mony.

Reflection Guest Artist - Mr Arvin (Photographer)

Mr Arvin spoke to us and shared his photographs on Monday 21st October. Mr Arvin talked about pure photography. Mr Arvin loves lines, shapes and circles. He loves having interesting lines and shapes in his pictures.

I really liked the picture of a lady coming into the light that Mr Arvin took. Mr Arvin said that he waited a long time for his neighbor to step out of her apartment into the light, when she stepped out he quickly snapped the photo. Mr Arvin used an old fashioned camera. He takes only 36 pictures and then gets them developed at a photo shop. He cannot see what he has taken until the picture comes back from the shop.

Mr Arvin likes to take ‘pure photos’ . He waits until the picture he has in his mind is happening in real life. He catches moments. He does not stage or set up pictures.

Function:  The way artists express themselves (how - media)
Mr Arvin expressed himself using photography. He chose to take this picture because it is interesting and has good shapes or colors.

Connection:  Interrelationship between society and the artist
Mr Arvin was influenced by what he sees around him on the earth. He was interested in people, animals, vehicles, anything that is around him.
Mr Arvin told this story when he was describing the photograph. He described standing in the doorway waiting for the lady to come out. He liked the light and knew she often came out at this time each day. He waited for about an hour, holding the camera ready. Finally she came out he snapped a picture. She was shocked and surprised. She was not expecting someone to be waiting there.

Perspective:  Personal response to the arts
The artwork makes me feel sad because  the lady looks like she is a bit scared.
The artwork also makes makes me feel a bit worried about the lady. Because she does not seem to have much money and seems quite poor. I wonder if she is okay? I wonder who she lives with? I wonder what she is doing now?

Connection: Personal connections to artwork

The artwork makes me think of people that are poor in Cambodia and live on the streets. I am lucky that I have a home and a family.

Sharing poems

The students shared poems they created this week.
We will continue writing poems for another week.
The focus of the new batch of poems will be ISPP and Phnom Penh.
The students will create banks of descriptive words they may wish to use
and use personification techniques we have practiced.

Speaking with Grade 11 Art students

Today the Grade 4 students viewed art work being created by the Grade 11 students.
They spoke to the artists about their work. They discussed their reaction to the piece. They thought about how it made them feel and what meaning it may have. They wondered what the message might be. The artist (Grade 11 student) then shared their thoughts, discussed the massage and how they tried to achieve that.

There was a lot of discussion about identity and how we have many layers. What we see is not always is happening beneath the surface.

The Grade 4 students will respond to one of the Art pieces they viewed today on their blogs.

Creating Photo Collages

The Grade 4 students experimented, creating photo collages of three scenes today.
They used photographs from the Riverfront, The Mansion and the ISPP campus.
They used photo's they have taken and shared to create interesting collages overlapping pictures.

The students selected pictures they thought were interesting based on color, texture and shapes.
They framed their collage and took a picture of it.

They will use similar techniques with technology and create more collages in Art and during Photo-editing sessions with Mr Matt in the coming weeks.

They will select poems they have written and use photo's to complete visual documents they can share with the class and on their blogs.

Using words and images to influence others ..

The Grade 4 students worked with Dana and I for an extra art session today.
We used word and images to spread a message related to a social issue.
