Writing genre - Reports / News Reports

Ms Marcelle introduced our new writing genre today.
We will be writing reports and news reports.

We started by reading a news report 'Terrifying Tooth' together.
We identified the key features in each section of the News Report.

We then watched a News Broadcast and found similar features.
We started working on a checklist which includes all the features we will use when writing news reports in the coming weeks.

Some features we discussed ....
  • Catchy title with larger font
  • Summary sentence - captures the main story
  • Who, What, Where, When, Why
  • Quotes from Eyewitnesses or Experts - Using "Speech marks"
  • Not opinions - facts that say what they saw or explain, show evidence
  • Past tense - describing an event that happened
  • Technical words (ie cartilage, fossils)
  • Easy to understand - ie show comparison to size of another object so understand how long.
