As a class we researched into the Chinese New Year celebration. We shared our ideas and understanding and then did further research to check our understanding and gather relevant facts for our news article.
We used our notes to write a collective news piece. Students from each group contributed sections of the article. We even added a quote from one of the students to complete the article.

CHINESE CELEBRATION - YEAR OF THE ROOSTER
Grade 4 students have been inquiring into a tradition that has been celebrated for more than 4000 years.
Chinese New Year is celebrated all over the world. It marks the end of Winter and the start of Spring. This may be why it is also called the ‘Spring Festival’.
To prepare for this holiday families clean and organize their home and buy mandarin trees.
To celebrate we have dragon dances, lion dances, firecrackers and a lantern festival.
The Dragon dance symbolizes good luck and prosperity. The Lion dance is to scare off evil spirits.
People also love to set off firecrackers to celebrate and to scare away evil spirits. Firecrackers were actually invented by the Chinese in the 7th Century.
The Lantern festival ends the celebrations. Colorful lanterns decorate the whole city.
A Grade 4 student, Tasha stated “ Chinese New Year is a fun time we spend with family and friends. It makes me very happy. We have feasts and performances”.
We all enjoy this special event in the calendar.
