Writing

The Grade 4 students have been writing their first recount for the year. They drew pictures, described the story to a friend, brainstormed key words and then started writing.

Here is a first draft by one Grade 4 student that I really enjoyed reading.

Summer and my Flicker

On the summer vacation me and my Mum and Dad went to England to visit my Grandma and Grandpa.

One day i decided to ride my flicker. A flicker is a scooter with two wheels on each side. It had free swinging handlebars. I tried to do a trick where you have to go downhill and do a spin. To do a spin you have to build up your speed, wriggle your legs and move the handlebars sideways.

I tried and I was flung off it and fell on the road. I felt stunned. I was in agony and pain.
I was laying on the ground. My hands and elbows were grazed and my finger was bleeding. I pulled myself up and dragged myself to the grass. I reached the cobblestones and the step. I pulled myself up and in my grandma’s front door.

Once inside the house my mum helped me get better. I was very stunned and I could not move my hand very well. She put water in my hand and made me sit for a moment.

After a few days I felt better and could move properly. I decided not to ride my flicker for a while.

The End

We have also been reading recounts and working out what the important parts are. What we need to include when writing. We will use all the information gathered to create a class checklist so we know how to make our writing even better tomorrow.
