Group challenge

The Grade 4 students completed a challenge working in small groups.

They had 18 minutes to create a structure to support a balloon. The aim was to get the balloon as high off the table as possible using only the materials in the basket provided.

The students then reflected on what they learned from doing the activity - regardless of their success at keeping the balloon high.

Some of the ideas the students shared include ...
  • We worked together and had a good team
  • I learned that working in groups is not so bad
  • We needed to LISTEN to each other
  • Next time we need to use more tape and not be distracted
  • We need to share and listen to others ideas so we can make better work
  • All team members need to work responsibly
  • When we were focused we got more done
  • We all had creative ideas
  • You had to be careful you did not damage the tower when adding more tape.
  • Being helpful is good
  • Listening to each other would have helped us at the start
  • We problem solved and worked out how to cut the tape without scissors
  • We used most of the items in out basket to make it stronger
  • We helped each other
  • We were organized and had jobs so we finished in time.
  • Next time we all need to agree on an idea before we start
