Worldwide: Giant pandas are starting to been endangered since the 1980s. Conservation is in full swing in China and in other parts of the world. The IUCN red list placed giant pandas in its rare categories in 1986 and in 1990 the group's red list of threatened species officially declared them endangered. They are still listed as endangered.

Habitat loss is one of the the reasons they are threatened. China's Yangtze basin regions which holds the pandas primary habitat. Roads and railroads are increasingly fragment the forest which isolates panda pollution and prevents mating. Forest destruction also reduces pandas access to bamboo they need to survive.

The second reason they are endangered is poaching. Hunting remains an ever presenting threat. Poaching the animal fur has decline due to strict laws and greater public awareness of the pandas protected status. But hunters seeking other animals in pandas habitats continue to kill pandas accidentally. There are only 1600 pandas left in the wild.

Wildlife reserves have been set up in China to make sure pandas have a home and care is taken to make sure they survive in the wild. You can help by donating or adopting the panda through the wildlife fund. Fundraise create a panda nation page for your next birthday, athletic events or other occasions and raise money to support WWF's or other organization global conservation efforts.

OIL SPILLS - AFFECTING MANY

By Class reporter - Choleang
ISPP NEWS

Oil spills are a big problem. Oil is spilled when the pipelines carrying heavy oil are damaged. These pipelines can explode, split and sometimes an earthquake can cause it to crack.
Ships also carry oil and these ships can sink.

When their is an oil spill it can spread everywhere. After an oil spills it can take decades to clean up the oil in the oceans. The oil that is spilt can also affect fish. Many fish, birds and animals are injured or killed. Oil spills can also cause damage like explosions.

Oil is greasy and sticky. It causes pollution that can have a devastating effect on the plants and animals that live there. Oil spill also release liquid petroleum into the environment. It pollutes and releases a carbon dioxide. When people breathe in the carbon dioxide they get sick.

What can we do to help? We can cut back on our energy consumption so we do not need to use so much oil. We can use less cars and moto’s to save energy. You can ride a bike or walk instead of using cars because it also pollutes our world with carbon dioxide. We can turn off the light and the air conditioner when we are not using it.

Save the Big Cats

There are about 40 types of big cats in the world and they are losing 80% of their population. They are being threatened with extinction. Lots of big cats are endangered or at risk of being endangered. These include cheetahs, tigers, lions, leopards, snow leopards, jaguars, iberian lynx, panthers and much more big cats. 16 cats are at risk of being endangered.
Big Cats are one of the most endangered species in the world. They are endangered because of habitat loss, global warming. They are also hunted to make medicines and trophies. Habitat loss is a huge problem. Humans are not sharing the environment. They are chopping down trees and these poor creatures are losing more of their habitat every single day. Deforestation is a huge problem for tigers in India and Jaguars in the Amazon. Global warming is a big problem too. As the climate is changing the Big cats have to adapt to the new weather. This is also huge problem for Snow Leopards. Us humans are very cruel sometimes and we must stop this! If we don’t act big cats are going to be extinct soon!

OVERFISHING - WHAT A PROBLEM

By Issarak - Grade 5 reporter
ISPP NEWS

24th February, 2015

Overfishing is when we fish too much and we decrease the amount of fish in the world. People are being greedy and are making a lot of fish species extinct. In just over the 55 years humans have wiped out the ocean predators including fish. Already 90 percent of the ocean top predators are extinct .The sword fish, the shark, the bluefin tuna ,and marlin ,and the king mackeral. People are overfishing because they want to make a lot money but they are not thinking about what is good in the long term.

Fisherman make money by selling the fish they catch. In 1989 ninety million fish were taken from the ocean. One place where overfishing occurs is Kenya. There are programs there now where they are teaching the fishermen to conserve the marine environment and increase the fish population rather than taking all the fish.

Here are 10 recently extinct fish:  Blackfin Cisco, the blue walleye, the galapagos damsel, the gravenche, the Harelip sucker, the lake titicaca's orstrianas, the silver trout, the tecopa pupfish, the thicktail chub, and the yellow cutthroat trout.

We can help stop overfishing, and here are some ways to help. We need to educate the fishermen so they know how to fish and still keep the population high. We also need to not eat the fish who are endangered, because the species will become extinct. Here is a website which might help youfind the one to eat,and the ones to not eat: http://overfishing.org/pages/guide_to_good_fish.php . You can also spread the word to your friends ,and family about overfishing ,and what are the problems of overfishing and what can we do to help.
