We started with a world problem / a story.
The students tried to work out the answer on their own first. They used a variety of strategies. Some used blocks, some drew pictures of pizza. Some students changed 1/2 to an equivalent fraction and then solved the problem.
We shared our thinking and the students reflected on how they like to solve these problems.
We will continue working on adding and subtracting fractions tomorrow and next week.
We will also continue to solve a variety of word problems with fractions in the coming week. The students are starting to underling key information and many are accurately turing it into an equation.
