The 7 Habits …

Habit 1: Be Proactive
I am a responsible person. I take initiative. I choose my actions, attitudes, and moods.
I do not blame others for my wrong actions. I do the right thing without being asked,
even when no one is looking.

Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind
I plan ahead and set goals. I do things that have meaning and make a difference. I am
an important part of my classroom and contribute to my school’s mission and vision. I
look for ways to be a good citizen.

Habit 3: Put First Things First
I spend my time on things that are most important. This means I say no to things I know
I should not do. I set priorities, make a schedule, and follow my plan. I am disciplined
and organized.

Habit 4: Think Win-Win
I balance courage for getting what I want with consideration for what others want. When
conflicts arise, I look for a win-win solution.

Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
I listen to other people’s ideas and feelings. I try to see things from their viewpoint
(paradigm). I listen to others without interrupting. I listen with my ears, my eyes, and my
heart. I am confident voicing my ideas.

Habit 6: Synergize
I value other people’s strengths and learn from them. I get along well with others, even
people who are different than me. I work well in groups. I seek out other people’s ideas
because I know that by teaming with others, we can create better solutions than any one
of us can alone. I look for Third Alternatives.

Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw
I take care of my body by eating right, exercising, and getting sleep (body). I learn in
lots of ways and lots of places, not just at school (brain). I spend time with family and
friends (heart). I take time to find meaningful ways to help people (soul). I balance all
four parts of myself.

We have been discussing 7 positive habits.
For each habit provide an example of how you achieve or can achieve this in your life.

Learning to touch type

In class we are also working on keyboarding skills.
In the lab this afternoon the students will start using bbc bitesize - dance mat typing.

The students can continue working on this at home. Encouraging them to use the correct finger placement on the keyboard and start touch typing.

There are also links to other typing sites in the helpful links section of this blog.

Mr Matt - New app 'Hopscotch'

Mr Matt was working with the students in our class today.
He introduced the students to an app called Hopscotch.

The Grade 4/5 students started doing some experimenting with simple coding and programing.
They were setting abilities, movement, drawing, appearance and values and creating original skits.

This is a free app and can be uploaded at home if the students want to keep practicing.

Birthdays and Mr Barry

Today we celebrated Bun San's birthday with Ice cream cake and apple juice.

We also had a special guest.
Mr Barry came to speak to us about being a leader at ISPP.

Musical conductors and writing summaries

We have been learning how to write a good summary from a book or article.
We practiced using an article about another type of leader - Conductor.

We read an article, wrote down the main points, shared then with the class and then wrote a two paragraph summaries. Here is an example written by Ellie

Conducting began 3000 years ago in Ancient Greece. Back then they used a 6 foot long staff instead of a baton. One of the reasons they use a baton now is because the 6 ft staff can be dangerous. A famous conductor Jean Baptist was conducting by stamping his staff and stomped on his foot. His foot became infected with gangrene and he died. The first conductor to use a baton was Louis Spehr in 1820.

The article also talked about a conductor named Maestro Fabio Luisi. He grew up in Genoa, Italy. When he was young he had asthma and couldn't play sports. He started playing the piano and reading music before he could even read words. He worked at the New York Metropolitan Opera and loves music and instruments. He says it is important to know the beat and play an instrument before becoming a conductor.

We will be be practicing note taking and writing summaries in the coming weeks.

More leaders

We have been reading case studies of teenagers that become leaders and have made a difference.

Brian Harris started a pen pal service called Friendship sees no color, Molly Vandewater spends hours of her free time caring for orphaned or injured animals, Michael Harris taught other in his community to care for the environment, Lo Dietrich, gives speeches and raises awareness and funds so researchers can find a cure for Cystic fibrosis.

The students have also selected a person they are interested in studying in more detail.
They will be researching this week to gain a good understanding of this person.

  • Early life
  • Changes the leader made?
  • Attitudes/Attributes displayed by leader?
  • Influences of leader (or changes they made) on the community/nation/world

Expanding our thinking about leaders

This week we have been doing activities to expand our thinking about leaders.

"If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader" John Quincy Adams

We went back to our concentric circles and identified many more leaders in the world.

The students also started thinking about a leader that really interests them.
A leader they may wish to focus on in the coming week.
