The students watched a short clip demonstrating how to make homemade lava.
Baking soda
They then created their own list of materials and instructions and tried to recreate the experiment in small groups (without the food dye). They made funnels, measured the vinegar and Bicarb Soda and fixed the balloons on small plastic bottles with ease. They then tipped the balloon and watched the reaction when the powder and liquid made contact.
The students discussed what happened with their partner and the class. They noticed that vinegar is an acid and when it mixes with Sodium Bicarbonate it forms a gas. It is a chemical reaction and the balloon is filled with the gas and blows up, using chemical energy.
They also made connections with other ways solids and liquids can form a gas.
We will continue to explore the different forms of energy by doing simple experiments.
We will also continue watching short clips about each on brain-pop.
