Worldwide: People everywhere are being affected by natural disasters but the people that are suffering the most are the poor. These people do not have money or savings accounts. When they are faced with a natural disaster, such as a flood, tsunami, drought, hurricane; they lose their crops, animals and are forced to leave their homes for their own safety.
The numbers of environmental refugees is on the rise. There are currently 10 million environmental refugees in the world but by the year 2050 this is expected to rise to 200 million. This rise is connected to climate change, which causes extreme temperatures and an increase in natural disasters in many parts of the world.
In 2013 one million people in Cambodia had to leave their homes because of severe flooding. This causes additional problems as people leave their village and move to the cities. There is more poverty, crops are destroyed, there is less food and water, increased disease and health problems, as well as increased food prices. There are also problems at the place they move to as there are limited resources to share.
You may ask how we can help? We can conserve our resources and share them more equitably. We can use green and renewable resources and raise awareness to help people in need.
