Using fractions in our lives

Grade 4 AS - Everyday fractions

In class we were talking about how we use fractions every day.
We tried to work out the answer to a few fraction questions as examples

  1. What fraction of the class can roll their tongue? 13 / 20

  1. What fraction of the class can stand still on one foot for 1 minute +?

16 / 20 =  simplify the fraction if you can
           16 / 20  = 3 /5

We can work these out by drawing pictures.

We then brainstormed some examples of fractions questions students might want to work out at home ..  Students will selct three fractions questions, work out the answer and simply.

What fraction of my family / my friends / the children in my street ……

  • Like to eat mushrooms
  • Can balance a spoon on their nose for 20 seconds
  • Can hula hoop for 2 minutes
  • Can balance an egg on a spoon for 2 minutes
  • Are left handed
  • Are right handed
  • Can skip for 5 minutes
  • Know the capital city of Canada
  • Can say the alphabet backwards
  • Can tie their shoelace in 20 seconds or under
  • Can play a musical instrument
  • Can spell the word …. (accidentally) or other word of your choice
  • Can fist pump the air for 2 minutes without a rest
  • Have broken a bone in their lifetime

Or think of other ways you can find fractions in using your family, friends, classmates, neighbors.

  1. Write the question
  2. Calculate the answer. You may want to draw it.
  3. Simplify the fraction if you can.
