Writing a news article - whole class

The Grade 4 students wrote a newspaper article using the key features they identified last week. They looked at the example 'Terrifying tooth' and thought of interesting sentences, facts and quotes they could add to the class piece.

THE SON OF GOD

Grade 4 students from ISPP went to Church to learn interesting facts about Christianity.

The students met two priests at the Church
of Child Jesus, Father Charlie and Father Dominic.

Father Charlie told the students the story of Jesus and how Christianity originated.
Father Dominic explained that the colors and symbols on the priests (leaders) robes were significant. White symbolized purity, red symbolized love and the cross shows authority.

The students found out that many people on the world have Christian beliefs. This is one third of the world population. More than 2 Billion people. There are many different types of Christians. Catholics, Protestants, Methodist, Baptist and Lutherans are all different branches of the Christian Church.

The Grade 4 students are learning about belief systems from around the world. Last week they visited Buddhist temples and next week they will be visiting a Synagogue. The central idea of their current unit is ‘Understanding others beliefs and values helps us respect each other’.

The Grade 4 students listened to the priests, asked questions to clarify their understanding and sketched symbols and pictures on display inside the church.

Florence an International student said “Going to church was peaceful and lovely”. Another Grade 4 student Tasha said” It would be very interesting to be a priest”.

Father Charlie tries to be a role model in Cambodia. He is partially deaf and an expert in Sign Language. He works with the deaf community in Phnom Penh and is helping to develop a Cambodian sign language for the hearing impaired.

Both priests are also fluent in Khmer. They conduct masses in Khmer each day at Catholic Churches in Phnom Penh.
