Reading, analyzing and summarizing news articles

ES G4 AS News reports - key features and summary 2017

The Grade 4 students worked in small groups reading news articles and identifying key features. They highlighted the important information - who, what, where, when, why and then used this to write a shorts summary.


All the articles were from TIME for kids.




A celebration of Kid Inventors     Summary written by Tasha & Stirling


Alexis Lewis who is 17 years old wanted to become an inventor. She attended the 2017 Kids Inventors Day at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering in Brooklyn, New York. She wanted to become an inventor because her Grandfather inspired her. Alexis presented her award winning inventions. One was the Bamboo Travois which can help carry someone when walking long distances. Alexis also invented an emergency mask pod which people can use to protect themselves from smoke inhalation.
Three Earthquakes rock Italy      Summary written by Otis and Pheakdey


On Wednesday January 18th, 2017 there were three earthquakes in Central Italy. They were 5.3 and 5.5 on the Richter scale which is very destructive. The areas affected lost power and cell phone networks went down. The areas were also affected by heavy snow which made it difficult for aid to reach them.

Parents Spend As Much Time on Screen as Teens      Summary by Calidina and Phalina


Parents of teens in the united States spend up to 9 hours a day using technology. 1700 parents were interviewed about technology. Most parents were worried about their children not getting enough exercise and being addicted to their phone. Parents stated that they try to model good behaviors but are aware they also need to cut back on their technology use.

The Giraffe may Go Extinct       Summary by Eemil and Silja


The Giraffe could go extinct after a population drop by human activities. In Southern and Eastern Africa numbers have dropped 40% in the past 30 years. The numbers were just under 100,000 according to Julian Fennessy IUCN spokesperson.

Big Backpacks Equal Big Problems     Summary written by Florence and Helen


High school students shuffle their way to school with giant backpacks. The problem is this can cause headaches, impair growth, back problems and problems concentrating at school.
Experts say that students should wear a backpack that is made for their size.

A Milky Way Map        Summary written by Monyroat and Kim Chhoung


In 2013 the European Space Agency launched a satellite into space to capture pictures of the galaxy. People wanted a 3D picture of the entire galaxy, which includes an estimated 300 Billion stars, planets, moons and asteroids. The satellite is called Gaia and is still in space collecting images.

Three Earthquakes rock Italy      Summary written by Mony and Jaeyong


Three hard Earthquakes hit Italy on Wednesday 18th January. There was heavy snow in the areas that were affected. The first Earthquake hit at 10.25am. There were two more Earthquakes in the next 10 minutes. So far no deaths have been reported.

At the UNiversity of illinois Scientists have found a way of increasing the amount of crops and food production. Stephen Long was leading this research. He helped find ways to speed up the process of plants getting the right amount of sunlight to create food. Growth in plants increased by 20% when Scientists made slight changes to the plants genes. This could be important as the world’s population keeps increasing.

Kids these days have major problems like sore necks and shoulders, problems with their spine and posture, stunted growth and headaches. Many of these problems are caused by heavy backpacks. Dr Karen said students should only carry bags that fit and only carry items you need. Bags should not weigh more that 10-20% of a child’s body weight.

It is an event that showcases the talent of kid inventors. The students have to make an invention and prove that it works. Alexis Lewis was 7 years old when she participated for the first time. Her Grandpa inspired her to become an inventor. Alexis had made inventions to make the world a better place. Some people also make inventions to help people who have disorders or disabilities.
