We visited Friends International and spoke with Otis' father, Mr James.
Mr James explained that Friends International is a Social Business.
A Social business is one where the organization tries to tackle social problems, improve communities and improve peoples lives. They train people so they have job skills and can earn incomes and improve their lives. They have many different training programs available in Phnom Penh. He showed some examples of people training as mechanics, nail technicians, construction and hospitality.
Mr James gave the example of a boy who was living in the street with no skills. after his training with friends International he was able to get a job on a Hotel in Phnom Penh.
Here is the link to their website - if you would like to research some more.
We also spoke to the Manager of Romdeng restaurant.
All the staff at the restaurant are trainees. they are learning how to cook food in the kitchen and work in front of house as Waiters and Waitresses.
There is no set time for training. The trainees can work at the restaurant for as long as they need. Once they are trained and confident they find work in other restaurants in Cambodia.
Many students in the class have visited Romdeng for a meal and some risk-takers have tried the tarantulas and crickets. I highly recommend a visit. You can eat delicious food and help support a fantastic organization at the same time.
Some students brought some money and purchased a small gift from Friends'n'stuff giftshop.
If you want to support Friends International you purchase gifts from their shop.
The giftshop is an important part of the social business. Many people make products that can be sold at the shop. This helps parents earn a regular income so they can support their children and send them to school.
There are many groovy products for sale at the shop. You can check out the website to see some items or visit the shop to buy gifts.
