There are now 5 Bread Talk stores in Phnom Penh.
Bread talk started in Singapore in 2000. It has rapidly expanded and there are now close to 1000 stores in 17 countries in the world.
At the BKK1 store, on St 51 we watched the Bakers make stock, spoke with the Manager and sampled their donuts. The St 51 store has only been open for a few months.
The students asked questions about staffing, training, business hours, stock and profits.
There are many staff at the St 51 store. Some start at 5am and bake the products they will sell that day. Others come in later in the morning when the shop opens and serve their breakfast customers.
Most of the staff at this store are new. They are being trained by the Manager. They are open 7 days a week and are becoming ver popular. While we were visiting there were many customers coming in to purchase bread, donuts, cakes and drinks.
There are many costs which need to be calculated before they can start making a profit.
The restaurant has been custom built and has a modern kitchen, industrial oven and a service area. They purchase all the ingredients, pay shop rental and staffing costs. The money that is left after all the costs is the profit. It can take time to build up and start making a profit with a new business.
Bread Talk use creative marketing campaigns and advertising to promote their shops and their products. They advertise on Billboards, in magazines and newspapers and have special promotions and competitions.
