Having an open mind - leaders

Today we discussed this quote as a class. The students decided whether they agreed or disagreed with the statement and gave reasons to back up their opinion.

"If we all stay on the path then we will not find new ways to do things"
"Sometimes I like going off the path and finding a better path"
"It can be scary and dangerous going off the path"
"If a leader goes off the path he/she can show people a better way"

We watched William Kamkwamba's story and discussed his leadership attributes. We used some examples from our word wall and added some more (delightful - Jed's contribution).
William was 14 years old in Malawi and too poor to go to school. He borrowed a book from the library and saw a picture of a windmill. he decided to make a windmill for his family and a few years on has changed the lives of 60 families in his village.
This is just the beginning... check out his website.

We did the same with Jane Goodall. The students were fascinated with her work and her dedication to the chimpanzees in Tanzania. Jane is now 81 years old and is still working to educate others about the chimpanzees and protect them from extinction.

Here is the link to the National Geographic clip about Jane.

The students also wrote about a time they were a leader and some of the attributes they needed to be effective. They shared their examples ie Art project leader, ISPP Reps leader, Football captain, looking after little brothers and sisters, Director of readers theatre.
