Considering different perspectives in conflict situations

Today we watched 4 scenes from the film Lion King. In each scene there was a situation of conflict.
The students discussed what each of the characters might be feeling and thought of options as to how they would solve the conflict.

  • Conflict between brothers - King Mufasa and Scar
  • Conflict between father and son - King Mufasa & Simba
  • Conflict between uncle and nephew - Scar and Simba
  • Conflict between friends - Simba and Nala
We tried to understand how each character was feeling. We will consider different perspectives when we look at different types of conflict in the coming weeks.

The Grade 4 students suggested the characters were feeling ....
Angry, disgusted, jealous, unhappy, scared, undervalued, unimportant, annoyed, mad, furious, sad, hurt, greedy, disappointed, useless, independent, brave, silly, sorry, embarrassed, excited, protective, manipulated, confused, upset, worried, guilty, ignored, bothered.

Some of the alternate solutions the students proposed included ...

  • Make a deal
  • Share the power
  • Listen to each other and try to understand what the other one is feeling
  • Share their feelings
  • Give Scar an important job so he feels valued
  • Have two Kings
  • Let the animals vote to see who should be King
  • Apologize, accept the apology and move on
  • Talk about concerns / problems
  • Follow the rules in future - don't disobey father
  • Simba needs to respect his fathers wishes
  • Simba needs to understand the dangers in the far lands
  • Simba needs to learn you cannot trust what everyone says - sometimes they can lie
  • Do what is best for the people / animals ...even if it is hard to do
  • Always tell the truth - it stops all the problems
  • Hiding from your problems does not make them go away - Simba needs to return and be King
  • Sometimes you have to fight when someone is manipulating you. Running away is not a good answer.
  • Simba needs to have confidence that he will be a good King and his mother will forgive him
  • Go back, be strong and help everyone - save the animals
