Homework choice - due Friday 29th January

For homework this week you get to choose a second set of tasks you want to do.
Select one new task from each of the grids below.
1 Unit task, 1 Reading task, 1 Writing task and complete some word problems.

SELECT ONE UNIT TASK THIS WEEK

Belief symbols
Using an A4 piece of paper or Google drawings create an imaginative piece of art showing as many different belief symbols as you can find with your own belief symbol as a feature in the centre.
Take a picture of your poster and add to your blog with a paragraph describing your beliefs.
Brainstorm ideas of what you value
Chose 6 values and add these to the coat or arms on a google doc or an A4 document  with pictures or symbol.
Write a sentence for each of your values explaining how they affect your actions and behavior. Post your coat of arms on your blog with your explanations.
Attitudes
Two of the attitudes that we are focusing on during our ‘Belief Systems’ unit are empathy and tolerance.
Make a mind map giving personal examples of ways we can display these attitudes.
Write 2 paragraphs sharing examples of when you demonstrated these attitudes.
Post a picture of your mind map and your 2 paragraphs on your blog.
Personal Heroes
Think about three people who are your personal heroes. Writing 2+ paragraphs about heros.
What you admire (look up to)  in those people. What is it that makes us appreciate some heroes rather than others?
Do you think your heroes are universal
(heroes to everyone)? Why / why not?
How do our thoughts about who we admire affect how we act and behave. Do these qualities become our values?
Post your writing on your blog.
Sensory Poem
Write a sensory poem about beliefs using strong verbs and adjectives.
In your poem try to describe what beliefs:
  • look like           
  • taste like          
  • smell like
  • sound like   
  • feel like
Post your poem on your blog.
Music About Beliefs
Find a YouTube video with a song that expresses the artist’s beliefs and values. Find the lyrics for this song. Copy and paste them below the URL of the song.
Write one paragraph about how this song shows the artist’s beliefs and values.
Write one paragraph about how the artist’s beliefs and values are the same or different from your beliefs and values. Post on your blog and be prepared to share your paragraphs with the class.

You will also read for 15-20 minutes each day


Current news
Read an online newspaper. Write a summary of a news article you thought was interesting.
Share the article and your summary on your blog.
You will tell the class about your article on Friday.

Book Seller
You need to choose a book that you have read and LOVED!
Make sure you’re passionate about it. Write a persuasive argument with a picture of the book cover and post on your blog.
You will need to try and sell reading this book to as many people in the class as you can on Friday.
Reading a different genre
Over the next few weeks read a book from each of the below genre’s.
Challenge yourself and try one you do not usually read
· Fantasy, Drama, Adventure, Mystery, Non-fiction/ biography
When you finish the book write a review of the book and genre on your blog.
You will share your choice and response with the class.
Get caught reading
You will also ask a family member or friend to take a photo of you reading. You can be in a favorite reading place or doing something a bit more unusual.
Email me a copy of your picture - getting caught reading and post on your blog. On your blog describe one of the books your have most enjoyed reading.

Beliefs and Values
Write a reflection on your blog about one of the field trips during our Belief systems unit. Include …
Five interesting fact you learned and pictures that match each fact.
Newspaper article
Reflect on an event that has happened to you personally or someone you know in the style of a newspaper article.
Include an image and 2+ paragraphs describing the event.
Post your article on your blog.
Writing
Imagine you are stranded on a deserted island.
Which three people would you like to have on the island for you?
You can chose someone who is dead or alive? You can know them personally or they can be famous.
For each person write a paragraph explaining why you chose that person? Do they have special qualities or skills? How will they help you or make you happy on the island. Draw a portrait of each person or attach a photograph next to the paragraph explaining why you chose them. Post your thoughts on your blog.
Venn diagram
Over the course of this unit you will be asked to compare different things using a Venn Diagram.  This activity is to help you practice.
Choose a friend, it could be a person in the class or your oldest and dearest friend.  Write your name above one circle. Write the name of your friend above the other circle.
Can you find a minimum of 5 things that you have in common? Write or illustrate them in the middle of the diagram.
Now list a minimum of 5 things that are different about the two of you. Take a picture of your venn diagram and post on your blog with a reflection of what you learned during this activity.

SOLVE AT LEAST 4 MATH OF THESE NEW WORD PROBLEMS THIS WEEK.
Bring a sheet with your answer and the steps you took to solve it. We will share strategies on Friday.
You will also practice to improve your multiplication skills and mental math speed and accuracy using the dice game, flipper, front row, mathletics each day. We will do quizzes to see if you are improving each Friday.


1. Tom and Bob are brothers and they each had the same amount of money which they put together to buy a toy. The cost of the toy was $22. If the cashier gave them a change of 6$, how much money did each have?
2. There is a total of 16 chickens and rabbits in a farm. The total number of legs (chickens and rabbits) is equal to 50. How many chickens are there and how many rabbits are there? (Hint:use a table)
3. There are 24 hours in one day, and 3,600 seconds in
one hour. How many seconds are in one day?
4. Julia read a book in 20 days. She read 16 pages every day for the first 15 days, and 18 pages everyday for the last 5 days. How many pages did Julia read?
5. If 6 children share 145 sweets equally, how many sweets will remain?
6. There are 61 boxes of pencils in a store. There are 14 pencils in each box. How many pencils are in the store?
7. Vondra's school decided to host a weekly farmers' market to raise money for the school choir. Last fall they sold squash, Brussels sprouts, persimmons, and potatoes. After adding together all of their earnings, Vondra found that they had made $303. If the school made $77 from squash sales, $42 from Brussels sprouts, and $51 from persimmons, how much did the school make from potato sales?
8. Joe is learning to play the trumpet. On Monday he practiced from 6:30 until 7:05. On Tuesday he practiced from 3:55 until 4:15. How many minutes did he practice in all over the two days?
